Goals

Goal 1: Improve my conducting skills – Quality Standard I, Element C.

As a music teacher I will need to be able to effectively conduct an ensemble from the podium. I have directed many ensembles over the past 12 years of my teaching career, including both concert and marching style percussion ensembles, popular music ensembles (rock, metal, funk, pop, punk, soul, etc.), and jazz big band. I am now getting into more of a hands-on continuous conducting role and I am aware that I could use some practice and refinement on my abilities.

Goal 2: Set expectations and hold students accountable for classroom behavior, norms, and routines – Quality Standard II, Element A.

Much of my teaching has been on-on-one or with small groups of 20 or fewer students, so now that I am working with larger groups it is important that I make my expectations and norms more prevalent in the classroom to ensure an environment that is conducive to learning.

Goal 3: Improve communication and collaboration within the department and demonstrate leadership – Quality Standard IV, Element D.

Communication and collaboration have always been a key for success in musical ensembles or any large groups with collective goals, so I can always continue to focus on putting this at the forefront of my consciousness.
