Italian Rudimental Drumming

Italian Rudimental Drumming – Details of the 19th Century Military System now available from Amazon as a 51 page, 5.5×8.5in paperback. You can find it on Amazon.com or at the Amazon affiliate for your country or region.

Inside you will find history, rudiments, barracks signals, field signals, an annotated list of manuals, comparisons to other drumming systems, and more.

18 Italian field signals have been reproduced in their original format and transcribed into modern notation for ease of study by the contemporary drummer. Passo di Scuola, Passo ordinario, Passo di carica, Passo di corsa, La Generale, L’Assemblea, La Disunione, La marcia della bandiere, La marcia ossia al campo, I Bandi, La Pregheira, La marcia funebre, Il Rapello, La Diana, La Ritirata, La Messa, Il Mezzo giorno, and Il Rullo.

The 1869 technical descriptions and instructions for all 11 Italian rudiments have been translated into English. Colpo di Bacchetta, Trau, Plau, Rau da 3, Rau da 4, Rau da 5, Rau da 6, Rau da 7, Rau da 8, Rau da 9, and Rullo.

All 19 of the barracks signals are reproduced in their original format and 12 manuals containing notation are discussed from 1803 to 1914.

My 2023 book Rudimental Grand Tour is perhaps the only other publication to explore the topic of Italian rudimental drumming in any detail, listing rudiments and some example signals from the Sardinian/Italian system as well as the Sicilian, Eporedian, and Austrian systems (used in many Italian states at one time). Due to its expansive and varied scope, there were many details about the Italian that were not included in the available space. Italian Rudimental Drumming expands greatly on the topic with transcriptions of the entire field duty, coverage of every major notated infantry manual, and much more. While there are some publications looking at the general history of Italian military music, my books are the only place to learn about the actual drumming, the nuts and bolts of the rudimental style, without tracking down every period manual yourself.

Get your copy today and learn what few in the past hundred years have known, the details of the 19th century military system.
